FIRST DISPLACEMENT -- ANOULD (cont.)
11 June through 15 July 1918
Firing the British LEWIS Machine Gun
This sector was relatively quiet with action limited to patrolling,
raids and sporadic artillery exchanges.
First combat casualties for the division occurred on the 14th when two
soldiers of the 11th Regiment were struck by German artillery fire. During
the early morning hours of the 17th the division was subject to a German gas
attack resulting in 3 soldiers killed and 24 wounded. Although a
fearsome weapon,
it did little to affect the outcome of the war. In their new sector
the troops learned about the wonders of barbed wire. Along with the trenches
barbed wire changed the face of the earth.
Intense patrolling and raids were the orders of the day. Real, on the
ground, experience developed the combat abilities of all the regiments and
by mid July the 5th Division was moved from the stable Anould Sector to the
St. Die Sector.
