as an 81mm, it does hit a lot harder. Hard to believe this weapon is an off shoot of WW One where a big mortar was needed to shoot gas shells. It belonged to the Chemical Corps and even in WW Two the Chemical Corps had 4.2 mortar platoons supporting the ground troops although by then it was with smoke and HE.
